CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Canada PM Mark Carney Calls Snap Election, Voting on April 28

In a surprise move, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced federal elections. On Sunday, he met with Governor General Mary Simon and requested the dissolution of Parliament. Simon accepted Carney’s request. Elections in Canada will now be held on April 28. Carney will face his main rival, Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre.

According to CNN, while announcing the elections, Carney told the nation that he is seeking a mandate to confront U.S. President Donald Trump and to strengthen Canada’s economy. Carney became Prime Minister in January after the resignation of his predecessor Justin Trudeau, and now leads the Liberal Party.

Polls suggest that the Liberal Party has seen a rise in popularity following Trump’s threats against Canadian sovereignty and a looming trade war with the United States. Carney stated, “Trump wants America to take control over Canada. We will not let that happen.”
