Bijnor. Uttar Pradesh’s Bijnor district has a distinct political identity shaped by sugarcane farming, sugar mills and a diverse social structure. Election results here reflect the impact of agrarian issues, caste equations, the role of Muslim and Dalit voters, and the strategies of major political parties. As preparations for the 2027 Assembly election gather pace, the district’s political picture is again in focus.

Sugarcane farmers and payment issues remain important. Sugarcane cultivation plays a key role in Bijnor’s economy. Sugar mills, jaggery production and rural trade are linked to the livelihoods of a large number of people. For farmers, the major issues are a fair price for sugarcane, pending payments, irrigation and rising cultivation costs. For political parties, their stand on these concerns could be important in winning the confidence of rural voters.

Muslim and Dalit voters have a significant role in the district, which has a notable population of both communities. Apart from them, Jat, Chauhan, Tyagi and other backward class voters also hold political influence in different areas. However, it is not certain that all voters from any one community will vote in favour of a single party. Local candidates, development issues, alliances and electoral circumstances also influence voters’ decisions.

The contest has kept changing across the eight Assembly seats. Bijnor district has eight Assembly constituencies – Bijnor, Chandpur, Noorpur, Dhampur, Barhapur, Nagina, Najibabad and Nehtaur. In the 2022 Assembly election, the BJP and the Samajwadi Party won four seats each. Some seats saw very close contests, making it clear that the district does not have the same political trend across all constituencies.

Chandrashekhar Azad’s victory increased the region’s political significance. In the 2024 Lok Sabha election, Chandrashekhar Azad of the Azad Samaj Party (Kanshi Ram) won from the Nagina seat, adding a new dimension to politics in the Bijnor region. The result brought the role of Dalit politics and new political leadership into discussion. How much influence his party will gain in the coming election will depend on candidates, organisation and local issues.

What issues will shape the arithmetic of victory and defeat? Several factors could be important in deciding Bijnor’s political direction in the 2027 Assembly election:

Farmers’ issues: Sugarcane payments, crop prices and agricultural costs.

Social equations: Voting trends among Muslims, Dalits, Jats and other communities.

Political alliances: The strategies of the BJP, SP, BSP, RLD and Azad Samaj Party.

Local candidates: Their image, public outreach and performance in the area.

Development questions: Roads, education, health, employment and rural facilities.

Bijnor’s electoral history shows that there is no single permanent formula for victory here. The final results could be shaped by the combined impact of local issues, candidates and the voting behaviour of different social groups.
