CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: CNN Central News & Network – ITDC India ePress / ITDC News, Bhopal. New Delhi. A major case of alleged fraud during recruitment examinations for public sector banks has come to light. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested four accused after taking action across several states. The investigation found that other people had allegedly appeared in examinations and interviews in place of some candidates. The alleged fraud was uncovered through examination of biometric identity data, including iris scans. According to the investigation agency, the alleged irregularities are linked to bank recruitment examinations held between 2020 and 2024.
The CBI’s Mumbai Special Task Force branch registered a case on the basis of a complaint from the Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS). Raids and investigations were then carried out at various locations. According to reports, those arrested include a Central Goods and Services Tax inspector posted in Kolkata. The other three accused were arrested from Delhi and Haryana.
The investigation alleges that members of this gang used to appear in bank recruitment examinations in place of other candidates. In this manner, alleged fraud was committed at different stages of the selection process, including the written examination and interview. A total of 135 people have been named in the FIR. These include alleged impersonators and candidates who allegedly benefited from the recruitment process.
IBPS analysed photographs and biometric identity data submitted during the recruitment examinations. Discrepancies were found in iris scans and other identification details. The investigation identified 257 suspect candidates. Of these, 180 people are said to be working in various public sector banks and regional rural banks.
The IBPS analysis identified 54 alleged impersonators who had appeared in examinations in place of more than one candidate. According to the investigation agency, with the alleged help of these people, about 172 candidates secured bank jobs. The case is being considered serious because it raises questions about the fairness of the recruitment process and the opportunities available to genuinely eligible candidates.
After rechecking the biometric identity data of suspect candidates, IBPS informed the banks concerned. According to the report, action has been taken against 180 working candidates and 177 other candidates have been barred from future recruitment examinations. The banks concerned have been instructed to take action in accordance with their service rules.
However, the final decision on the termination of the services of all suspect employees will depend on the inquiries by the banks concerned, applicable service rules and further legal proceedings. The filing of allegations or the detection of discrepancies in the investigation cannot by itself be treated as a final decision against every individual.
The CBI is continuing its investigation into the role of others involved in the alleged recruitment scam. The agency is trying to ascertain how impersonators were arranged for the examinations and who provided assistance at different stages of the selection process.
The case underlines the importance of identity verification, biometric checks and a transparent selection process in banking recruitment examinations. A clear picture of the responsibility of the accused and the full extent of the alleged fraud will emerge only after the investigation is completed and the judicial process moves forward.
