CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Bhopal: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has made an important change to the curriculum for Classes 9 and 10. According to the board’s new circular, students studying in Class 9 in the academic session 2026-27 will not have to study Environmental Education when they reach Class 10. Along with this, the modules on Computational Thinking (CT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI), as well as the subject ‘Individuals in Society’, have also been kept out of the curriculum for the students concerned.
Who will the new rule apply to? This CBSE change will apply to students who are currently studying in Class 9 in the academic session 2026-27 and will appear for the Class 10 board examination in 2027-28. It will have no effect on students currently studying in Class 10. The already prescribed syllabus and examination system will continue to apply to them.
Students will study nine subjects. Under the new system, students will have to study a total of nine compulsory curricular areas. These include two languages, mathematics, science, social science, a third language, art education, physical education and health, and vocational education. However, the board examination will mainly be held in five subjects: two languages, mathematics, science and social science.
Vocational education will remain compulsory. The board has clarified that vocational education will continue as a compulsory curricular area. Students may choose ‘skill development’ for this or opt for any one of the 22 skill subjects notified by the board. The objective is to connect students with practical and employment-oriented skills along with their studies.
Purpose of the curriculum change. CBSE’s decision is aimed at reducing the burden of additional subjects on students and aligning the curriculum with the prescribed timetable. The board has clarified that these changes will give students a better opportunity to focus on the five main board examination subjects.
