CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: CBSE clarifies Class 10 passing rule remains unchanged for 2026-27

New Delhi. The Central Board of Secondary Education has clarified the confusion over the passing rule for Class 10 students. The board said there has been no change in the passing criteria for the 2026-27 academic session. Students will have to secure a minimum of 33 percent marks in a subject by combining marks obtained in internal assessment and the external examination.

The confusion arose after the wording of a recently issued document led students, parents and teachers to believe that it would now be mandatory to secure 33 percent marks separately in internal assessment and the board examination. Removing the confusion, CBSE said the previous system will continue for Class 10.

According to the board, the assessment structure of 80 percent external examination and 20 percent internal assessment will remain in place. A student will be considered to have passed a subject after securing 33 percent marks by combining the two components. CBSE also clarified that there has been no change in the format of the 2026-27 question papers or in the assessment system.

CBSE will also release sample question papers and marking schemes for Classes 10 and 12. These are intended to help students and schools prepare in line with the examination format and syllabus.

After this clarification, Class 10 students have received relief and no longer need to worry about any new rule requiring separate passing marks. However, students will have to keep in mind the prescribed assessment structure and examination-related instructions for each subject.
