CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: In its routine testing for August 2026, the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) found that 220 drug samples did not meet prescribed quality standards. In addition, one drug sample from Delhi in the National Capital Region was found to be spurious. The information was disclosed in the regulator’s monthly drug quality and spurious drug alert.
According to the report, 29 of the 220 not-of-standard-quality samples were tested by central drug laboratories, while 191 samples were identified by state drug testing laboratories. The samples included paracetamol, metformin combinations used in diabetes medicines, some antibiotics, vitamins and cough medicines. The spurious drug sample found in Delhi is allegedly linked to unauthorised manufacturers who used a brand name owned by another company. According to CDSCO, the matter is under investigation and action will be taken under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act and related rules.
CDSCO clarified that a finding that a drug is not of standard quality applies to the specific sample tested and its related batch. The regulator regularly collects drug samples from sale and distribution points to test their quality and makes information on substandard or spurious medicines public.
