CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: CDSCO warns people against using painkillers, antibiotics without doctor’s advice
New Delhi. The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation has issued a fresh advisory over the uncontrolled use of painkillers and antibiotics. The regulator has advised people to avoid taking these medicines without medical advice. According to CDSCO, incorrect or prolonged use of these drugs can cause serious health-related problems.
CDSCO has specifically urged caution over the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Repeated or excessive consumption of these medicines can adversely affect the kidneys and increase the risk of chronic kidney disease. People who already have kidney disease, dehydration or other risk factors have been advised to exercise particular caution.
The regulator has also cautioned against the use of antibiotics without medical advice. Antibiotics are not effective in common viral infections, and their unnecessary use can worsen the problem of antimicrobial resistance. Doctors have also been advised to decide the need, dosage and duration of a medicine according to the patient’s condition.
CDSCO has also asked chemists and distributors to follow the prescribed rules. Medicines covered under Schedule H and H1 should not be sold without a valid medical prescription. People have been advised to seek medical advice instead of self-medicating in cases of persistent symptoms or symptoms that keep returning.
