CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) has issued a major warning over the indiscriminate use of painkillers and antibiotics. In a circular issued on September 22, 2026, the organisation expressed concern over the risk of chronic kidney disease and other adverse effects linked to the improper use of medicines.
CDSCO has specifically advised people to avoid unnecessary, excessive or prolonged use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). People who already have kidney disease or are at risk of impaired kidney function have been advised to inform their doctor about their condition before taking such medicines.
The organisation has also advised people not to self-medicate with antibiotics. Antibiotics are generally not required in conditions such as common viral infections. Taking antibiotics unnecessarily can increase antimicrobial resistance, which may reduce the effectiveness of medicines in treating some infections in the future.
CDSCO has asked doctors to prescribe medicines after considering the patient’s age, illness, other ongoing medicines and kidney-related risks. Pharmacists and retail sellers have also been advised to follow rules while selling prescription NSAIDs and antibiotics and not to encourage self-medication.
According to experts, if pain or fever occurs repeatedly, it is important to seek medical advice instead of repeating an old medicine on one’s own. People with kidney disease, dehydration or other health problems should be especially cautious while using painkillers.
