CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Srinagar/Mumbai: Opposition legislators protested in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar. The demand has come amid a controversy over the functioning of the Election Commission and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list.
In Maharashtra, petitions have been filed in the Bombay High Court over the SIR process. One petition has challenged 14 administrative actions of the Election Commission and sought restoration of the names of voters removed during the SIR. The petitioners have also sought a judicial inquiry into the process of deleting names from the voter list and the decisions linked to it.
Another petition has questioned the procedure adopted for the SIR in Maharashtra, the collection of documents and the rules related to deletion of voters’ names. The petitioners have demanded that before any voter’s name is removed, the person should be given a legal notice, an opportunity to present their case and a reasoned order.
Some of the petitions filed in Maharashtra have also sought a stay on upcoming Assembly elections until new and legally valid voter lists are prepared. One petition has requested the formation of an independent judicial committee to examine alleged data deletion and software-related disruptions.
Meanwhile, the political controversy around CEC Gyanesh Kumar has intensified after reports emerged about objections by two election commissioners over decisions within the Election Commission. However, the allegations made in these petitions are still subject to judicial scrutiny, and the court’s final decision is awaited.
