CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Central Sanskrit University, New Delhi, organized a captivating performance of the classical Sanskrit play Mṛcchakatika by students of the Centre for Natya Shastra Studies and Research, located at the Bhopal campus, during the 19th World Sanskrit Conference held in Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal.
The play Mṛcchakatika, written by ancient poet Shudraka, portrays the famous love story of Charudatta, a merchant from the city of Ujjayini, and Vasantasena, a courtesan. The play reflects various aspects of the then-contemporary society. Alongside Sanskrit, the original play also incorporates multiple languages. Following this tradition, the stage performance featured a beautiful blend of Sanskrit, Hindi, Malvi, and Nepali, which was widely appreciated by the audience.

The performance was presented in the ‘Sangeet Natak’ (musical drama) style, which involves not only acting but also live singing by the actors — a unique feature of this dramatic form. The stage direction and dramatic structure of the play were designed by Dr. Prasad Bhide, a professor at the Natya Centre, with the support of other faculty members from the department.
The production was carried out under the guidance of Professor Ramakant Pandey, Director of the Bhopal campus. Prof. Pandey also hosted the World Sanskrit Poets’ Conference and recited Sanskrit poetry at the event. Around 40 Sanskrit poets from various countries participated in the poetic recital. Additionally, Prof. Pandey chaired two academic sessions for research paper presentations during the conference.
