CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: The central government has directed the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to carry out an investigation into a serious in-flight anomaly involving an Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner. During the final approach to landing, the aircraft’s Ram Air Turbine (RAT), an emergency backup system, deployed unexpectedly — despite all electrical and hydraulic systems reportedly functioning normally. The flight, operating from Amritsar to Birmingham, landed safely, but the incident triggered immediate concern from aviation authorities. The DGCA assigned an officer from its safety directorate in the northern region to lead the probe, underscoring the gravity of the event.
Pilots’ associations, including the Federation of Indian Pilots (FIP), have pushed for a broader audit of all Boeing 787 aircraft in Indian operations, citing potential risks to passenger safety. This occurrence comes just months after the tragic crash of an Air India flight in Ahmedabad, which claimed 260 lives. As authorities investigate, the aviation community is closely watching for findings that may reveal technical or procedural lapses — and to ensure stricter safeguards against unexpected system activations mid-air.
