CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Delhi: New Delhi. The central government has prepared a multi-level action plan to tackle the rise in air pollution in Delhi-NCR during winter. Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav said government efforts alone would not be enough to control pollution, and participation by all concerned agencies and citizens was also necessary. He stressed monitoring pollution sources, time-bound action and the use of technology.
Bhupender Yadav on October 30 inspected the Commission for Air Quality Management’s new Integrated Command and Control Centre, ‘PAVAN’ (PAVAN-I3C). The centre connects more than 30 digital data sources related to pollution in Delhi-NCR on one platform. It will analyse data linked to air quality monitoring stations, industrial units, construction sites, weather information, vehicle movement and incidents of stubble burning. Its objective is to identify sources of pollution and send alerts to the departments concerned for immediate action.
The minister said a decision has been taken to prohibit dust-generating construction and demolition activities in Delhi-NCR from November 5 to 20. Projects of national importance will remain exempt from this restriction. In Delhi, a ban is already in place from November 1 to January 31 on outdoor construction activities and demolition work that generate dust.
Monitoring industrial emissions, mechanical sweeping of roads, dust control at construction sites, a ban on waste and material burning in the open, and traffic management are also being prioritised for pollution control. Officials have been directed to act immediately on alerts received through the digital monitoring system.
Yadav said coordination among agencies in Delhi as well as Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Punjab is necessary to ensure clean air. The government’s strategy also gives important place to citizens’ participation and local-level monitoring in pollution-affected areas.
