New Delhi: The atmosphere around the debris became deeply painful after an under-construction building collapsed in Chawri Bazaar in Old Delhi. Some were searching for their brothers, while others kept calling their sons in an attempt to find out whether they were safe. Amid sounds emerging from the debris and the movement of rescue teams, relatives waited for hours, hoping their loved ones would be brought out. The eyes of many families grew weary as they kept looking for their own.

The three-storey under-construction building in Gali Sheesh Mahal collapsed at around 9:50 a.m. on November 5. Information has emerged that 10 to 15 labourers were present there at the time of the accident. So far, four people have been pulled out of the debris. Among them, Kishori (40) and Sanjeet (45) died, while Sahdev Chaudhary (25) and Firoz (37) were injured. The condition of both injured persons was said to be stable.

Meanwhile, the families of Vipin Ram (42) and Pankaj Sharma (40) kept moving between the accident site and hospitals in search of them. Vipin’s brother said that after receiving information from the contractor, he called several times, but could not establish contact. Pankaj’s brother also continued to seek information from the rescue teams and police.

Because of the narrow lanes at the site, heavy machines could not reach the spot. Teams of the NDRF, Delhi Police, fire department and municipal corporation are carrying out the search operation by removing debris with small tools and by hand. In connection with the accident, police have arrested three contractors. The administration has also ordered an inquiry into the incident.
