CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: CNN Central News and Network – ITDC India ePress | ITDC News, Bhopal: Bhopal. While buying medicines, most people feel satisfied after checking only the expiry date, but other information printed on the packet is equally important for safe use. These details help in identifying the medicine, confirming the correct dose, storage requirements and the authenticity of the product. Before taking a medicine, make sure to check these seven points.

1. Name of the medicine and its strength: Check the correct name of the medicine and its strength on the packet, such as 250 mg or 500 mg. Medicines with similar-sounding names can cause confusion. Match it with the doctor’s prescription.

2. Batch number: The batch number identifies the consignment of the medicine. In case of a quality-related complaint or recall, it helps trace the product.

3. Date of manufacture and expiry: Check both the manufacturing date and the expiry date. Do not use a medicine after its expiry. For syrups or other liquid medicines, the period of use after opening may also apply.

4. Name and address of the manufacturer: Check the information about the manufacturer or marketer on the packet. If the packaging appears suspicious, the printing is blurred or the seal is broken, do not buy the medicine and contact the pharmacist.

5. Dosage and method of use: Read the instructions written on the label – whether the medicine is to be taken before or after food, how much is to be taken and how often. Do not change the dose without the advice of a doctor or pharmacist.

6. Storage instructions: Some medicines need to be kept at normal temperature, while others must be stored at a prescribed temperature or in a refrigerator. Protect medicines from sunlight, moisture and heat. Keep them out of the reach of children.

7. Warnings, precautions and licence-related information: Read information related to allergies, possible side effects, interactions with other medicines and special precautions. Also check the licence or other regulatory details available on the packet as per the rules applicable in India. If in doubt, confirm with a registered pharmacist.

Remember before using a medicine: If the colour or shape of a tablet appears unusual, the packet is torn, the seal is open or the smell of the medicine has changed, do not use it. Even before expiry, a medicine can get spoiled if stored incorrectly. Do not take antibiotics or prescription medicines without a doctor’s advice.
