CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: The dispute between nurses on hunger strike near Rajarathinam Stadium in Egmore, Chennai, and the government has escalated over their demands. The protesting nurses allege that five of their representatives were called to the Tamil Nadu Secretariat for talks, but were arrested by police after reaching there. The allegation was made by advocate Varatharajan, who is providing legal assistance to the protesters.

A large number of nurses were protesting under the banner of the Tamil Nadu Intermediate Health Workers Association. Their key demands include a monthly salary of Rs 45,000, equal pay for equal work, permanent appointment, job security and payment of pending incentive amounts for 2023-24. The organisation says several employees are currently receiving about Rs 21,000 per month.

Police tried to detain some protesters who continued the sit-in at the protest site beyond the scheduled time. This led to a tense situation between the protesters and the police. According to Tamil media reports, the hunger strike was later temporarily withdrawn, and the nurses said the agitation could resume after November 3 if their demands are not met.

For now, the allegations regarding the arrest of the five representatives have been made by the protesting side. A detailed official clarification from the government and police on the allegation is awaited.
