The court noted that the husband’s act of calling his wife a “pet rat” and insisting she live separately from her parents amounted to psychological abuse.
The judgment highlighted that mental cruelty is a valid ground for divorce under Indian law, emphasizing that emotional and psychological harm inflicted by a spouse can be as damaging as physical abuse. The court stressed that respect, understanding, and emotional support are fundamental in marital relationships, and neglecting these aspects constitutes cruelty.
Alongside granting the divorce, the court directed the husband to pay ₹5 lakh to the wife as compensation. Furthermore, the husband was ordered to provide a monthly maintenance allowance for the couple’s child, ensuring the child’s well-being and financial security.
