CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: The Chhattisgarh High Court has raised serious concerns over the state of government hospitals after reports surfaced about the use of rusted surgical blades and a severe shortage of essential medical kits. Taking suo motu cognizance, the court has directed health authorities to submit a detailed response explaining the lapses and outlining corrective measures.
According to media reports, several government hospitals in districts across the state have been operating with inadequate medical supplies. Patients and their families alleged that operations were being delayed and critical procedures compromised due to the unavailability of basic surgical kits. In some instances, rusted blades were reportedly used during procedures, posing serious risks to patient safety.
The High Court bench emphasized that healthcare is a fundamental right under the Constitution and that negligence in maintaining basic hygiene and availability of essential equipment is unacceptable. The judges questioned how such conditions were allowed to persist despite budget allocations and repeated warnings about the state’s healthcare infrastructure.
Health department officials have been asked to provide data on procurement processes, supply chain lapses, and accountability of responsible officers. The court has also directed the government to ensure immediate corrective steps to prevent recurrence of such incidents.
Public health activists welcomed the intervention, stating that the judicial push may help address systemic inefficiencies in state-run hospitals. The case has once again highlighted the urgent need for accountability, transparent procurement, and better monitoring of Chhattisgarh’s healthcare facilities.
