CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: The Chhattisgarh High Court on Thursday came down heavily on the state’s Education Department after the Education Secretary failed to appear during the hearing of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) related to the Right to Education (RTE) Act.

The division bench, while expressing displeasure, warned the officials that the court should not be taken lightly. “Do not make a mockery of the High Court,” the bench observed, highlighting the seriousness of judicial proceedings in matters concerning fundamental rights like education.

The PIL in question seeks proper implementation of the RTE Act, which mandates free and compulsory education for children between the ages of 6 and 14. Petitioners alleged irregularities and inadequate enforcement of RTE provisions in various schools across the state.

The court had earlier directed the Education Secretary to remain present for the hearing to provide clarifications on the measures being taken to ensure compliance. However, the absence of the senior official was viewed as disregard for judicial authority.

Issuing a stern warning, the bench ordered the state government to ensure the Education Secretary’s presence at the next hearing. It further stressed that accountability in the education sector is critical, as delays and negligence directly affect children’s rights.

Legal experts suggest that this development highlights the judiciary’s proactive stance in safeguarding the Right to Education. The case is expected to set a precedent for greater administrative accountability in implementing education-related laws in Chhattisgarh.
