Sudden deaths of children in Delhi and Lucknow raise concern over heart health
CNN Central News and Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News / Agencies, Bhopal:
Two incidents of sudden deaths among schoolchildren in the country have raised concern over serious heart-related problems at a young age. In Delhi’s Mayur Vihar, a 9-year-old girl died after suddenly fainting and collapsing at school. In Lucknow, a 13-year-old Class VIII student collapsed in the classroom shortly after reaching school. He was declared dead after being taken to hospital. Cardiac arrest is suspected in both cases. However, the exact causes of death will be confirmed through medical examination and post-mortem reports.
Why is the risk rising at a young age?
According to experts, poor lifestyle alone is not responsible for sudden cardiac arrest in children. At times, congenital heart disease, diseases linked to the heart muscle and genetic causes can disturb the electrical system that controls the heartbeat. Such conditions can remain without clear symptoms for a long time.
In addition, lack of physical activity, obesity, junk food and spending long periods sitting in front of mobile phones and television can increase the risk of problems such as high blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes in children. These conditions also affect heart health in the future.
Do not ignore symptoms
Fainting while playing or running, chest pain, unusual breathlessness, a fast or irregular heartbeat and repeated dizziness can be warning signs. If there is a family history of sudden death at a young age or genetic heart disease, it is important to consult a doctor for evaluation. Tests such as ECG and echocardiography may be advised as required.
Emergency systems are necessary in schools
Experts say teachers and staff in schools should be trained in CPR. Schools should also have first-aid arrangements and, where necessary, automated external defibrillators (AEDs). If a child suddenly collapses and is not breathing normally, emergency medical help should be called immediately and CPR should be started.
According to doctors, it cannot be concluded on the basis of these incidents that heart disease is increasing among all children. However, timely identification of symptoms, screening of children at risk and better emergency preparedness in schools can help in serious situations.
