According to available reports, China’s World Meteorological Centre had sent an email to Nepalese authorities about 12 days before the disaster, but it did not give a clear warning about any glacier breaking or a glacial lake outburst.
According to reports, the email mainly expressed concern over heavy rainfall and possible landslides. It did not clearly mention a forecast of the specific glacier or glacial threat after which sudden large-scale devastation occurred in Nepal. For this reason, it would not be appropriate to regard China’s claim that it had issued sufficient warning 12 days before the disaster as entirely correct.
After the incident, Nepal has also asked China to share real-time data related to weather, glaciers and floods in the Himalayan region. The two countries have already been discussing ways to strengthen monitoring of Himalayan disasters and early warning systems.
