CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: An important development has emerged in the direction of reducing tensions along the India-China border. According to the Defence Ministry’s annual report for 2025-26, a significant reduction was recorded during 2025 in the deployment of China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) opposite the Line of Actual Control (LAC). The report said PLA deployments in Chinese areas opposite the northern borders and in traditional training areas have declined compared with earlier levels.
On the basis of the report, this development is being seen as the next step towards de-escalation after the disengagement between India and China in 2024. However, the Indian side’s priority is not limited only to reducing troop numbers. India has consistently stressed that troops present near the border should be sent back to permanent rear locations and barracks, a process referred to as de-induction.
The Defence Ministry report said the Indian Army’s deployment from eastern Ladakh to Arunachal Pradesh remains strong and it is prepared to deal with any emergency situation. Efforts are continuing to resolve border-related issues through Corps Commander-level talks and Border Personnel Meetings between the two countries.
However, recent military activities in the Upper Subansiri area of Arunachal Pradesh indicate that tensions along the border have not ended completely. In such a situation, the reduction in China’s deployment can be seen as a positive signal, but further steps will be required for the restoration of normalcy as it existed before 2020.
