Citizens Geo-Tag Trees Around KBR National Park

CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: A citizen-led environmental initiative in Hyderabad has resulted in the geo-tagging of hundreds of trees surrounding the iconic KBR National Park. The exercise was undertaken by volunteers and environmental activists with the objective of creating a publicly accessible database of trees and strengthening efforts to protect the city's green cover. The project documented 672 trees located on road medians around the park, assigning each tree a unique identification number and GPS coordinates.

The initiative was carried out over three days by a team of citizen volunteers associated with the Save KBR movement. Besides geo-tagging, the survey recorded tree species and mapped their exact locations, creating a comprehensive digital inventory that can be used for monitoring and conservation purposes. Organizers said the database will improve transparency and make it easier for citizens, researchers, and authorities to track changes in tree cover around the park.

The exercise gained significance following recent concerns over tree felling and infrastructure projects proposed around KBR National Park. Environmental groups have argued that scientific documentation is essential for safeguarding existing trees and ensuring accountability in urban development projects. The initiative follows legal and public debates over conservation in the eco-sensitive zone surrounding the park.

Environmentalists believe that the geo-tagged database will serve as an important tool for future conservation efforts and help preserve one of Hyderabad’s most significant urban green spaces. The project highlights the growing role of citizen participation in environmental protection and sustainable urban planning.
