CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant has declined to meet Rahul Gandhi and Opposition leaders. The Opposition leaders had sought an appointment to discuss the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list and issues concerning Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The CJI’s office informed them of the decision through an email. It was stated that the issues proposed to be raised are already under consideration before the Supreme Court. In such a situation, a direct meeting instead of following the judicial process would not be appropriate. However, Opposition leaders are free to file a petition on these issues, and their petition can be heard along with the related matters.
Rahul Gandhi had announced on Monday, 12 October, that he would take out a march to the Supreme Court with Opposition parties. The Opposition had planned to submit a memorandum to the CJI, raising demands to stop alleged vote theft, halt the SIR process and seek the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The Congress has described the march as a campaign linked to the defence of democracy and the Constitution.
Meanwhile, security arrangements have been tightened in Delhi in view of the march. Officials have imposed traffic restrictions, and some metro stations have also been closed for security reasons. Opposition parties say accountability is necessary on questions related to the revision of the voter list. The Election Commission, meanwhile, says the purpose of the revision is to correct the voter list, and eligible voters whose names have been left out can get their names added under the prescribed procedure.
