CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Delhi: The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) has announced a protest in Mumbai on October 2 over issues related to electoral rolls and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process. CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke has demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and said the organisation will begin its campaign from Mumbai.
The protest has been announced at Shivaji Park in Dadar at 4 p.m. on Gandhi Jayanti. However, Mumbai Police have not granted permission for the proposed gathering at the venue, citing existing restrictions governing non-sporting events at Shivaji Park. Police have advised the organisers to identify an alternative location.
Following the denial of permission, Dipke announced that the CJP would proceed with a “Jail Bharo Andolan”. He said the organisation would continue its campaign in other cities, including Goa, Bengaluru and Kolkata, before a proposed programme in Delhi.
According to the CJP, its demands include changes to the electoral-roll revision process, freezing the electoral roll prepared in 2025 and establishing a transparent and independent process for appointing future Election Commissioners, with participation from civil society. These are demands raised by the organisation and do not represent established findings about the Election Commission.
The protest comes amid a wider political and legal debate over the Election Commission’s electoral-roll revision exercise. The Commission has maintained that its procedures are intended to ensure accurate electoral rolls and has said that differing views expressed during internal deliberations are part of its decision-making process.
The proposed Mumbai demonstration is expected to be followed by further CJP programmes in other cities, keeping electoral-roll revision and the functioning of the Election Commission in public focus.
