CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Delhi: The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) has claimed that at least 10,000 people associated with its movement and supporting organisations were detained across India ahead of its planned October 10 protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi. The demonstration is aimed at demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
CJP spokesperson Ashutosh Ranka alleged that students, farmers’ groups, Dalit organisations and political activists were among those detained. The claims have not been independently verified. Police officials have denied specific allegations of detention and assault in Rajasthan, while the authorities maintain that security arrangements are necessary to preserve public order.
The planned protest follows a demonstration in Bengaluru on October 8, where CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke, actor-activist Prakash Raj and YouTuber Dhruv Rathee participated in a programme opposing the electoral-roll revision exercise. Protesters alleged that eligible voters had been excluded and called for greater accountability in the electoral process.
Delhi Police has not granted permission for the October 10 gathering, citing security and law-and-order concerns. Authorities have deployed more than 20,000 police and paramilitary personnel across the capital. Despite the restrictions, Dipke has said the organisation intends to proceed with the protest.
The developments have intensified debate over electoral-roll revisions, the right to peaceful assembly and the balance between public protest and law enforcement.
