CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) has announced a protest against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls at Mumbai’s Shivaji Park on October 2. The organisation has raised questions over the SIR process and demanded accountability from Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The proposed demonstration is scheduled for Gandhi Jayanti. CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke has said the organisation intends to proceed with the protest despite the Mumbai Police denying permission for the gathering. The police cited High Court directives, the absence of civic clearance and possible traffic disruption while refusing permission.
Police presence has been increased around Shivaji Park and adjoining areas ahead of the proposed gathering. Authorities are monitoring the area as a precautionary measure to maintain law and order and manage possible crowd movement.
CJP has said its demands include questions regarding the SIR exercise, a review of electoral-roll-related issues and greater accountability in the functioning of the Election Commission. These are demands raised by the organisation and do not establish wrongdoing by the Election Commission.
Authorities had advised the organisers to consider an alternative venue, including Azad Maidan, instead of Shivaji Park. The refusal of permission has become part of the dispute between the organisers and the administration.
The proposed protest comes amid a wider political and legal debate over voter-list revision and the SIR exercise in several parts of India. The Election Commission has maintained that electoral-roll revision is intended to improve the accuracy of voter lists, while opposition groups and protest organisers have raised objections to aspects of the process.
