CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: New Delhi. The National Council of Educational Research and Training has included personal income tax in the Class 9 curriculum for the first time. The new social science textbook gives students basic information about income tax and also explains how tax is calculated under the new tax regime.

The new book, “Understanding Society: India and Beyond – Part 2,” includes slab-based income tax calculation in a chapter related to personal finance. Students are told how different tax slabs apply on the basis of income and how tax liability is calculated. Significantly, the chapter does not mention the old tax regime and focuses entirely on the new tax regime.

Income tax has not been limited to calculation alone in the curriculum. The book describes honest and timely payment of taxes as a civic responsibility. In addition, students are given information under personal financial management on topics such as income, budgeting, savings, investment and protection from financial risks.

According to NCERT, the aim of developing financial understanding at an early age is to prepare students to make better economic decisions in the future. The book also introduces investment options such as fixed deposits, bonds, shares and mutual funds. In this way, Class 9 students will gain basic knowledge of personal finance, from earnings to expenditure, savings, investment and tax payment.
