CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: The changes happening in our environment have now become a serious concern. Extreme weather fluctuations, melting glaciers, and rising sea levels raise the question—can we tackle climate change in time? Today, we need to understand that the climate crisis is not just an environmental issue but also deeply impacts our daily lives.
When the U.S. Pulled Back
In 2020, then-U.S. President Donald Trump withdrew the United States from the Paris Climate Agreement and the World Health Organization (WHO). The Paris Agreement was a historic global effort to combat climate change, aiming to reduce global temperatures by 2°C.
The exit of a developed nation like the U.S. was a significant setback. The U.S. is the second-largest greenhouse gas emitter in the world. Trump argued that the agreement was harmful to American industries and jobs. However, this step weakened global efforts against climate change.
Recently, the U.S. took another controversial decision, reversing the mandate for electric vehicles and, indirectly, promoting the continued use of petrol and diesel vehicles. In his inaugural address, Donald Trump advocated for “Drill, Baby, Drill,” signaling a focus on fossil fuels. This decision poses a challenge for nations striving to promote electric vehicles and reduce carbon emissions.
Impact on the Environment:
Blow to Global Unity: The U.S. exiting the Paris Agreement and promoting fossil fuel vehicles weakened international cooperation.
Increase in Greenhouse Gases: Greater use of petrol and diesel vehicles directly increases greenhouse gas emissions, exacerbating the climate crisis.
Setback to Renewable Energy: Lack of support for electric vehicles could reduce investment in green technologies and renewable energy.
Health Impacts: Increased reliance on petrol and diesel vehicles could lead to a rise in pollution-related diseases.
What Can We Do Now?
Although former U.S. President Joe Biden rejoined the Paris Agreement during his tenure, Donald Trump, in his second term, has once again decided to keep the U.S. out of the agreement. Additionally, the push for greater use of petrol and diesel vehicles remains a major concern. Despite this, every nation and individual can contribute to significant change:
Adopt Electric Vehicles: Whenever possible, choose electric or public transport over petrol and diesel vehicles.
Recycle and Save Energy: Properly manage waste and reduce electricity consumption.
Invest in Green Energy: Promote renewable energy sources like solar and wind power.
Support Policies: Encourage government programs that focus on environmental conservation and green technology.
A Ray of Hope:
Though the situation is dire, solutions are still within reach. By prioritizing solar and wind energy, halting deforestation, and spreading environmental awareness, we can mitigate the crisis.
The Need of the Hour: Act Now
To resolve the climate crisis, countries and individuals must work together. The responsibility doesn’t lie solely with governments; every individual’s contribution matters.
Remember, if we take the right steps today, we can ensure a safe and better future for generations to come. We only have one planet—now is the time to save it.
