CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Chhattisgarh Chief Minister has floated a proposal to the Union Defence Ministry to name the Indian Navy’s upcoming warships after prominent rivers of the state. The initiative is aimed at highlighting Chhattisgarh’s rich geographical and cultural heritage while instilling a sense of pride in regional contributions to the nation’s defense sector.

During a recent meeting with defense officials, the CM emphasized that naming warships after rivers like Mahanadi, Indravati, and Godavari (flowing through parts of Chhattisgarh) could strengthen the connection between the Indian Navy and India’s diverse natural heritage. He noted that such symbolic gestures not only honor the nation’s water bodies but also inspire younger generations to appreciate the importance of rivers in national development and security.

The proposal has been received positively by several defense analysts, who see it as a step toward integrating regional identity with national defense initiatives. The Indian Navy, known for naming its ships after mountains, cities, and historical figures, could now add Chhattisgarh’s rivers to this distinguished list, reflecting the nation’s diversity.

If approved, the new fleet of warships named after CG rivers will serve multiple purposes: boosting regional morale, raising awareness about environmental preservation, and reinforcing India’s maritime strength. The proposal is currently under consideration at the Ministry of Defence, with final approvals expected in the coming months.
