CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay inspected the Chembarambakkam reservoir on October 26 and directed officials to maintain round-the-clock monitoring of water levels, inflow and discharge to ensure public safety during the northeast monsoon. The inspection focused on reservoir management, flood preparedness and maintaining adequate water reserves for Chennai’s drinking water needs.
During the visit, Vijay reviewed the reservoir’s sluice gates, water intake tower, bund areas and related infrastructure with officials from the Water Resources Department. He instructed authorities to keep control rooms operational with adequate staff and ensure that sluice gates, power supply, backup power systems and communication networks remain fully functional.
The Chief Minister also directed officials to release surplus water gradually and in a regulated manner if necessary. Authorities were asked to plan any discharge into the Adyar River carefully to minimise flooding risks in vulnerable downstream areas of Chennai. Residents living in low-lying areas must receive advance warnings before water is released.
Vijay stressed coordination among the Revenue Department, Police Department, Greater Chennai Corporation and the city’s water supply authorities. He also instructed officials to preserve sufficient flood-buffer storage while ensuring an adequate supply of drinking water throughout the monsoon season.
According to official figures, at 6 a.m. on October 26, the reservoir’s water level stood at 14.76 feet against its full level of 24 feet. Its storage was 1,488 million cubic feet (mcft), approximately 41% of its total capacity of 3,645 mcft. The recorded inflow was 150 cusecs, while the outflow was 208 cusecs.
The inspection comes as authorities strengthen preparedness for seasonal rainfall and seek to reduce the risk of urban flooding while safeguarding Chennai’s drinking water resources.
