CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay reviewed preparations for the expansion of the Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Breakfast Scheme during a meeting at the State Secretariat in Chennai on September 18. The expanded programme is scheduled to be launched on September 22 for students studying in Classes VI to VIII in government and government-aided schools.

According to the government, around 15.3 lakh additional students across 15,454 schools will benefit from the expansion. An additional allocation of ₹217.63 crore has been made for the scheme during the current financial year.

The programme will use different implementation models across urban and rural areas. In Greater Chennai Corporation, breakfast will be prepared through centralised kitchens for 447 schools. In other municipal and adjoining town-panchayat areas, 2,150 schools will receive breakfast through centralised kitchens under the Directorate of Municipal Administration. In rural areas, self-help group members will prepare and serve meals at 12,857 schools.

During the review, Vijay directed officials to maintain cleanliness and hygiene in kitchens and ensure continuous monitoring. He also instructed authorities to provide students with hot, nutritious and quality meals.

The expansion was originally planned for September 17 but was postponed to September 22. The rollout will be implemented across the State, with Chengalpattu and Tiruppur excluded temporarily because of the Model Code of Conduct linked to upcoming Assembly bypolls.
