CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: The Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) has asked Delhi Police to set a date for a peaceful protest. Giving the police a 24-hour ultimatum, the party said that if permission and a date for the protest are not given within the stipulated time, it will announce its next step in the movement. The protest is being held to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and against alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list. The party says it wants to raise its demands in a democratic manner.

CJP co-convener Saurav Das said police usually ask applicants to seek permission for a protest 10 days in advance. The party has now asked the police themselves to specify the date and time. Party leaders are scheduled to contact Delhi Police in this regard on Monday, October 12. Earlier, on October 10, police detained a large number of protesters when they tried to march towards Jantar Mantar. Party founder Abhijit Deepke and other leaders were also detained and later released.

After his release, Deepke said he was not afraid of arrest and that even if he were sent to jail 100 times, he would continue to raise the party’s demands. He made it clear that the movement would continue. Delhi Police, meanwhile, has taken a strict approach to the protest, citing security and law-and-order concerns. A dispute also continues between opposition parties and the Election Commission over the deletion of names from the voter list in connection with the SIR.
