CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: American tennis star Coco Gauff staged a superb comeback to reach the women’s singles semifinals of the 2026 US Open. In the quarterfinal, fourth seed Gauff defeated fifth-seeded Russian Mirra Andreeva 2-6, 7-6(7), 6-2.
The match did not start well for Gauff, with Andreeva taking the first set comfortably 6-2. Gauff was under pressure in the second set as well, but showed outstanding mental strength. In the tie-break, Gauff saved two match points and won the set 7-6 to get back into the contest. In the deciding third set, the American asserted her dominance and completed a 6-2 win.
This is Gauff’s second US Open semifinal. She had earlier won the title here in 2023. She will now face the new world No. 1 Elena Rybakina in the semifinal. Rybakina defeated Zheng Qinwen in the quarterfinal to enter the US Open semifinals for the first time and also claimed the No. 1 position in the WTA rankings for the first time in her career.
