CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: The central government has advised caution over the use of cold and cough medicines for the health of young children. Giving certain types of cold and cough medicines to children below four years of age may be unsafe. Parents and guardians should therefore avoid giving these medicines to children without medical advice.
Caution is necessary in the use of medicines among children. The bodies of young children are more sensitive to medicines. Ingredients present in some cold and cough medicines may carry the risk of drowsiness, restlessness and other side effects. Medicines should therefore be used only according to the child’s age and weight. Giving medicines meant for adults to children can also be harmful.
Do not give medicine without a doctor’s advice. Guardians are advised to consult a paediatrician instead of administering medicines on their own when children show symptoms of cold and cough. It is also important to read carefully the instructions written on the medicine bottle or packet. Giving multiple medicines together that contain the same medicinal ingredients should be avoided.
Seek medical help if symptoms are serious. If a child shows symptoms such as difficulty in breathing, high fever, extreme lethargy or dehydration, medical assistance should be sought immediately. For children’s safety, medicines must be used only on a doctor’s advice and according to the prescribed instructions.
