CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: A 35-year-old carpenter from Uttar Pradesh, Rifakat, has been successfully treated for a serious heart condition through a very small incision. Doctors at Sharda Hospital in Greater Noida performed complex surgery on two heart valves through an incision of about 6 centimetres using minimally invasive cardiac surgery (MICS) technique. According to the hospital, the patient had severe rheumatic heart disease with mitral stenosis, tricuspid regurgitation and severe pulmonary arterial hypertension.
During the surgery, doctors replaced the mitral valve and repaired the tricuspid valve. In conventional open-heart surgery, a large part of the chest may need to be opened, while in this case the operation was performed through a small transaxillary incision, from the side of the armpit. In minimally invasive techniques, the valve can generally be accessed through a small incision of 4 to 6 centimetres.
According to the hospital, the surgery was performed free of cost under the Ayushman Bharat scheme and the patient is now recovering in stable condition. Doctors said a case involving two valves and severe pulmonary hypertension was technically challenging, so detailed investigations and careful planning were carried out before the operation.
The patient said he earlier suffered breathlessness and dizziness while walking, but is feeling better after the surgery. However, such minimally invasive surgery is not suitable for every patient; specialists decide based on the patient’s disease and medical condition.
