CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: In a major move in Assam politics, the Congress has ended its political alliance with the Akhil Gogoi-led Raijor Dal. According to an organisational circular issued by the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), the decision will take effect immediately.
Why did the alliance break? The Congress has cited alleged violations of alliance discipline and rules as the main reason for ending ties with Raijor Dal. The Congress alleged that leaders of Raijor Dal made personal and derogatory remarks against Congress leaders and other alliance partners on several occasions.
The Congress also alleged that Raijor Dal had allegedly carried out malicious propaganda against its leaders and attempted to tarnish their personal image. According to the party, such activities affected mutual trust and coordination within the alliance.
The controversy intensified over Akhil Gogoi’s statements before the alliance collapsed, with public exchanges between the two parties becoming sharper. Congress leaders objected to Gogoi’s remarks and accused him of disregarding the principles of the alliance.
Defending its leaders, the Congress said its senior leaders were working on issues such as flood relief and rehabilitation in Assam. Congress leaders also questioned Gogoi’s political role and his statements.
Opposition equations changed after the election. The Congress and Raijor Dal had earlier been part of a broader opposition unity against the BJP in Assam. The two parties, along with other regional and Left parties, had tried to form an electoral front.
However, in the 2026 Assam Assembly election, the BJP secured a strong majority by winning 82 of the 126 seats. The Congress won 19 seats, while Raijor Dal managed to win two seats.
What will be the Congress’s next position? Despite ending the alliance, the Congress has made it clear that it will continue to raise issues concerning the people of Assam and question the policies of the BJP government. The party said the end of political relations with Raijor Dal would not mean any change in its struggle on issues of public interest.
With the Congress distancing itself from Raijor Dal, the equations of opposition politics in Assam have changed further. In the coming days, it will be important to see how Akhil Gogoi’s party advances its political strategy after parting ways with the Congress.
