CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: The 2026 West Bengal Assembly election results have delivered a significant political warning for the Congress party despite a visible decline in NOTA (None of the Above) voting across the state. Political analysts believe the reduced NOTA percentage reflected lower voter anger, but Congress failed to convert anti-incumbency sentiment into electoral gains.
According to political observations, the Congress struggled with delayed campaigning, weak grassroots coordination, and the absence of a strong statewide narrative during the elections. While the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Trinamool Congress (TMC) dominated the political battleground, Congress remained largely ineffective in several constituencies. The party’s decision to contest separately after breaking ties with Left allies also impacted its electoral performance.
Experts suggest that Congress must urgently rebuild organizational strength, improve booth-level outreach, and develop a consistent opposition strategy if it wants to remain relevant in Bengal politics. The election outcome has highlighted the shrinking influence of the party in a state where bipolar politics between the BJP and TMC continues to intensify.
The results are now being viewed as a wake-up call for the Congress leadership ahead of future state and national electoral battles.
