CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Under the leadership of Executive Director Ajay Singh, AIIMS Bhopal has once again demonstrated its multidisciplinary medical expertise. The institute successfully treated a 24-year-old pregnant woman suffering from a heart condition.
Ten years ago, she had undergone surgery for a narrowed heart valve, during which an artificial valve was implanted. Recently, during her pregnancy, the artificial valve got stuck, causing her severe breathing difficulties.
Performing a second surgery to replace the blocked valve before full-term pregnancy posed significant risks to both the mother and the unborn baby. Hence, a critical decision was made to keep the patient under intensive care (ICU) until the baby had fully developed before proceeding with any medical intervention.
Most hospitals typically refer such high-risk cases to specialized medical centers. However, the multispecialty team at AIIMS Bhopal successfully executed both complex procedures simultaneously.
Through a well-coordinated surgical approach, the team first performed a cesarean section, ensuring the safe birth of the baby. Following this, they replaced the blocked heart valve, thereby saving the mother’s life as well.
This achievement highlights the hospital’s excellence in multidisciplinary healthcare and patient-centered treatment. The success of this surgery was made possible through the seamless collaboration between the Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS) Department, the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department, and the Pediatrics Department. Their combined efforts played a crucial role in completing this high-risk procedure successfully, further establishing AIIMS Bhopal’s capability to handle complex and critical medical cases.
Emphasizing the significance of this milestone, Prof. Ajay Singh stated:
“This successful surgery reflects the exceptional teamwork and expertise of AIIMS Bhopal. Managing both childbirth and life-saving heart surgery in a single operation is a rare feat and a moment of great pride for our institution.”
