CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: New Delhi. The protest by the Congress and opposition parties demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar intensified further on Thursday. The Congress has called for demonstrations across the country. In Delhi, preparations are under way for a major protest by opposition MPs, with a large number of MPs said to be joining it.

Earlier on Wednesday, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and other opposition MPs had tried to march towards Jantar Mantar. Police stopped them on the way, and several leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, were later detained. They were released after some time. Police cited restrictions in force in the New Delhi area and rules related to permission for demonstrations.

The Congress and opposition parties allege that irregularities took place in the special intensive revision of the electoral rolls. The opposition is demanding Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation over the issue. Rahul Gandhi also said during the protest that Gyanesh Kumar would have to step down from his post. However, the Election Commission has defended the electoral roll revision process, and the controversy over the allegations against it continues. Opposition parties have also sought an appointment with President Droupadi Murmu. A large number of opposition MPs are expected to participate in today’s protest. Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee is also likely to be part of the opposition delegation that is expected to meet the President.
