CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Differences between the ruling TVK and the Congress in Tamil Nadu politics over the prime minister’s post have begun to surface openly. Some TVK leaders are demanding that Chief Minister and party chief C. Joseph Vijay be projected as the prime ministerial face for the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. On the other hand, the Congress has been consistently promoting Rahul Gandhi as the possible prime ministerial face of the opposition alliance.

The demand to make Vijay the PM has increased tensions. The Congress is uneasy over the “Vijay for PM” campaign being run by TVK leaders. Congress leaders have rejected TVK’s demand, viewing it as a reflection of the thinking of Vijay’s supporters. The Congress argues that a decision on the prime ministerial face for 2029 cannot be made merely through the announcement of one alliance partner.

At the same time, voices within TVK calling for Vijay to be pushed forward in national politics are growing louder. Some party leaders say the party can expand beyond Tamil Nadu under Vijay’s leadership and that he should be given a major role at the national level in 2029.

All eyes are now on the September 9 meeting. Amid this dispute, TVK has called a meeting with its alliance partners on September 9. TVK has contacted allies including the CPI(M), CPI and MDMK. MDMK chief Vaiko has confirmed that he will attend the meeting. However, the biggest question concerns the Congress, and it is still not clear whether it has been formally invited to the meeting. The official agenda of the meeting is not yet clear, but its timing is being considered significant. After differences within the alliance over the 2029 leadership and the prime ministerial face became public, the meeting is being seen as an attempt to establish coordination among alliance partners.

The relationship between the Congress and TVK now faces a major test. In Tamil Nadu, the TVK-led government has the support of several alliance partners, including the Congress. In such a situation, Vijay’s national ambitions and the Congress’s clear position on Rahul Gandhi could become a challenge for the alliance. At present, the differences between the two parties are over the possible prime ministerial face. Political attention is focused on whether the September 9 meeting produces any understanding on the issue or whether tensions rise further.
