CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: The Congress party has formally appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging his intervention in the case of Indian nurse Nimisha Priya, who faces the death penalty in Yemen. Priya was convicted in 2017 for the alleged murder of a Yemeni national and has been imprisoned since. Human rights activists and legal experts have long argued that the case involved mitigating circumstances and lacked a fair trial process.
Congress leaders have emphasized the humanitarian aspect of the case, highlighting Nimisha’s role as a mother and healthcare worker. They are requesting that the Prime Minister use diplomatic channels to negotiate a pardon or secure her release through the traditional Islamic practice of blood money (diya), which can be paid to the victim’s family as compensation.
The party has also criticized the government’s silence on the matter and urged swift diplomatic engagement with Yemeni authorities. The case has garnered public attention and international concern, with appeals coming from various civil society groups and human rights organizations.
As the window for intervention narrows, Congress’s appeal is seen as a last-ditch effort to bring Nimisha Priya back home safely and prevent the execution of an Indian citizen abroad.
