CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Bhopal: Nagpur. In the Maharashtra Legislative Council election, the Congress has won from the Nagpur Graduate constituency, dealing a major setback to the BJP. Congress candidate Abhijit Wanjari defeated the BJP’s Sudhakar Kohale. The result is being considered significant because Nagpur is counted among the BJP’s key areas of influence, besides being the home region of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Union minister Nitin Gadkari.
Abhijit Wanjari records victory: During counting for the Nagpur seat, a close contest was seen between the Congress and BJP candidates. After no candidate secured the quota required to win in first-preference votes, second-preference votes were counted. After a prolonged counting process, Abhijit Wanjari won by a margin of 3,271 votes. His success gave the Congress an important lead in this election.
Political setback for BJP: Nagpur also holds special political importance because it is the headquarters of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. In addition, the association of Devendra Fadnavis and Nitin Gadkari with the city makes this seat important for the BJP. The Congress victory in such an area has started a new discussion in state politics.
Congress gets a boost: This victory has raised the morale of Congress workers and leaders in Maharashtra. For the party, the result is an opportunity to strengthen its position in the Legislative Council election. For the BJP, meanwhile, reviewing its local-level electoral performance and organisational strategy has become important. However, the result of one Legislative Council seat cannot be considered a decisive indicator of political support across Maharashtra. Even so, the Congress victory in an important region like Nagpur has intensified discussion on the state’s political equations.
