CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: A controversy has erupted over the selection of the Indian contingent for the Para Asian Games to be held in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, from October 18 to 24. A group of para shooters has made serious allegations of corruption, demands for money and manipulation of rules in the selection process. The players have submitted a complaint to the Director General of the Sports Authority of India, seeking an independent inquiry into the matter.
The shooters have alleged that players were asked to pay 20 per cent of their government cash awards as commission for selection in the national team. The complaint also alleges bias in the allocation of international quota and wild-card places, as well as changes in qualifying scores. The players have claimed that out of the 15 international quota places received by India, two were allegedly left unused because the financial demand was not met.
However, Paralympic Committee of India president Devendra Jhajharia rejected all the allegations, saying the selection was carried out entirely on the basis of merit and the guidelines set by the Sports Ministry. The players have said they will approach the High Court if their complaint is not resolved.
