CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Animal Husbandry Minister (Independent Charge) Lakhan Patel stated that under the leadership of Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, continuous efforts are being made in the state for cow conservation and promotion. The state observed the Year of Cow Conservation from April 9, 2024, to March 29, 2025, during which various initiatives for cow protection and service were undertaken across Madhya Pradesh.
The government has decided to establish self-sufficient cow shelters (Gaushalas) in the state, making Madhya Pradesh the first state in the country to do so. These cow shelters will be high-tech, equipped with modern facilities for cow care, including organic manure production, CNG gas generation, and electricity generation through solar energy.

On Monday, Minister Patel reviewed departmental activities at the Animal Husbandry Ministry. The meeting focused on the action plan for self-sufficient Gaushalas, targets to increase milk production from 9% to 20%, and other departmental progress. Officials were provided with necessary directives for implementation.
Minister Patel emphasized that animal husbandry plays a key role in doubling farmers’ income in the state. He added that breed improvement of cattle is essential to make Gaushalas self-reliant. The government is running several schemes for livestock development, including the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Kamdhenu Scheme. Additionally, institutional and individual awards are being provided to encourage Gopalkos (cow caretakers) in the field of cow service.
The meeting was attended by Principal Secretary of Animal Husbandry Umakant Umrao, Director P.S. Patel, and Managing Director of Poultry Development Corporation Satyanidhi Shukla.
