CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Bhopal: Greater Noida. A case has come to light at a Punjab National Bank (PNB) branch in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh, where account holders’ deposits worth crores of rupees have allegedly gone missing. It is alleged that fixed deposits (FDs) of several customers were prematurely closed and the money transferred to other accounts. After the matter came to light, the bank management suspended five employees, including the branch manager. Police and the bank’s anti-corruption team are investigating the case.
The matter was uncovered when an account holder’s family went to the bank to withdraw money in a time of need and was told that there was not enough balance in the account. According to complainant Gautam, about Rs 94 lakh was deposited in his father’s account, but on checking, only Rs 16,000 remained. He then filed a complaint with the police. Similarly, another family alleged that about Rs 1.29 crore had been deposited in their mother’s account as compensation for land acquired for Jewar Airport. Even after the family withdrew some amount, more than Rs 1 crore should have remained in the account, but it is alleged that the remaining balance was not found. So far, 16 people have complained to the police in this matter. Police have registered an FIR on the basis of the complaints and started an investigation. The bank has also deployed new staff in place of the suspended employees. It has emerged that affected customers have been assured that their money will be returned. At present, the total amount of the alleged embezzlement, the transfer of funds and the role of the employees concerned are under investigation. The actual loss and those responsible will become clear only after the investigation is completed.
