CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Culture is emerging as a powerful influence on how Indians plan and experience their holidays, with 67% of Indian travellers saying they plan trips around heritage, festivals, food, and other cultural experiences, according to Skyscanner's India Culture Travel Index. The report highlights a shift from conventional sightseeing towards immersive journeys that connect travellers with local traditions, communities, cuisine, and history.

Heritage remains the strongest motivation, with 47% of respondents willing to plan a trip around heritage and historical sites. Festival tourism is also gaining momentum, as 72% said they would consider travelling specifically to attend a major cultural or religious festival. Durga Puja emerged as the leading festival choice, followed by Ganesh Chaturthi and Navratri Garba.

Food is another major driver, with 43% of Indian travellers saying they would plan a holiday around regional culinary experiences. Social media and YouTube, along with food, craft, and heritage trails, are encouraging travellers to discover destinations through more authentic experiences. The report also found that many Indians are increasingly exploring Tier-II and Tier-III cities for cultural journeys.

Skyscanner said travellers are becoming more deliberate in planning, with many booking months in advance. Safety concerns and travel costs remain key barriers, but the growing appetite for culture-led journeys signals strong potential for India's heritage and tourism economy.
