Cyber fraudsters are now targeting children and teenagers who play online games in the name of free coins, rewards and game updates. Fraudsters use social media, videos and gaming-related platforms to display attractive offers and lure children into clicking suspicious links. In a recent report, cyber experts advised parents to remain alert to such inducements.
In this method of fraud, children are told that opening a link will get them free in-game coins, new features or rewards. After visiting the link, they may be asked for login details, mobile numbers, passwords or other sensitive information. In some cases, attempts are also made to take control of gaming accounts through fake websites. The risk is higher for children because they often open links without checking them. In addition, if banking or payment facilities are linked to the mobile phone, parents’ accounts may be debited if purchases or payments are unknowingly authorised. Such methods are continuously emerging in cases related to cybercrime.
Experts advise parents to teach children not to click unknown links and not to share OTPs, passwords, UPI PINs or bank-related information on any website. NIC also advises people not to click suspicious links and not to download unknown apps or APK files. If money is lost in cyber fraud, a complaint should be made immediately by calling 1930 and the case should be registered on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.
