CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News / Agencies, Bhopal: Cyclone Murasu, active over the Bay of Bengal, has intensified into a severe cyclonic storm. In view of the threat, the administration in Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and Tamil Nadu has issued a high alert. In Andhra Pradesh’s coastal areas, a plan has been prepared to move about 30,000 people to safer places. According to officials, nearly 2,000 people have so far been shifted to safe locations and the evacuation operation is continuing.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Murasu is likely to cross the coast near Ongole, between Nellore and Narsapur in Andhra Pradesh, between midnight on November 2 and the morning of November 3. During this period, wind speeds may remain between 100 and 110 kilometres per hour, while gusts are expected to reach up to 120 kilometres per hour.

A warning for heavy to extremely heavy rainfall has been issued in Andhra Pradesh’s coastal districts. The state government has deployed teams of the National and State Disaster Response Forces. Relief camps, control rooms and emergency services have been kept ready. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea.

Administrations in Odisha and Tamil Nadu have also been instructed to remain alert. In Odisha’s southern districts, preparations are being made to move people from vulnerable areas to safer locations in view of the possibility of heavy rain and landslides.

Notably, relief and rehabilitation work is still under way in areas affected by Cyclone Arnab, which recently hit the eastern coast. Against this backdrop, Murasu has increased the administration’s challenges. Officials have appealed to people not to pay attention to rumours and to follow official warnings issued by the weather department and the administration.
