In Chhattisgarh’s Balod district, a court has sentenced a daughter-in-law and her lover to life imprisonment in a case involving the murder of her father-in-law by electric shock. The two had tried to conceal the killing by presenting it as an accident, but during preparations for the funeral, villagers noticed injury and burn marks on the body. The police investigation that followed revealed the full case.
The lover used to visit the house to teach harmonium. The case is from Khadenadih village under the Daundilohara police station area. Geetabai Nirmalkar, the daughter-in-law of the deceased, Manohar Nirmalkar, met music teacher Lekhram Nishad during bhajan-kirtan gatherings in the village. Lekhram used to come to her home to teach her harmonium. According to the police investigation, the two began to grow close, which Manohar opposed. Police said the two then conspired to kill him over this dispute.
According to the prosecution, on the night of July 16, 2025, Manohar was given an electric shock while he was asleep. The next day, an attempt was made to portray his death as an accident caused by falling from a bicycle. The investigation also found that turmeric and other material had been applied to the body to hide injury marks. During preparations for the funeral, villagers saw injury and burn marks on the face, forehead and neck and informed the police. The post-mortem confirmed death due to electric shock. Police took the investigation forward on the basis of call details, forensic evidence and recovered material.
After hearing the case, the Additional District and Sessions Court held Geetabai Nirmalkar and Lekhram Nishad guilty of murder and sentenced them to life imprisonment. Technical and scientific evidence played an important role in the verdict, which came after about 15 months.
