DDA to provide free land for Chhath Puja, instructions issued for lighting and cleaning at ghats
New Delhi: Reviewing preparations for Chhath Puja in Delhi, Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu has directed the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) to provide land and ponds free of charge for creating ghats for devotees. The facility will be made available along the Yamuna floodplain as well as at public places and parks under the DDA’s jurisdiction. The Lieutenant Governor issued the directions on Friday during a review of preparations with the DDA vice-chairman and senior officials.
The Lieutenant Governor asked officials to ensure that the identified sites and ponds for Chhath Puja are thoroughly cleaned in advance. He directed that adequate lighting be ensured at all ghats so that devotees face no difficulty in performing puja and offering arghya. He called for transparency in the allotment of ghats and said priority should be given to local needs, events held in previous years and the demand of devotees. Officials were specifically instructed to keep in mind the needs of people from Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh.
The DDA has also been asked to deploy special staff at the ghats to manage arrangements and assist devotees. Directions were also issued to provide necessary facilities in coordination with the concerned departments of the Delhi government, the Delhi Jal Board and the municipal corporation.
The Lieutenant Governor also stressed that after the puja is completed, the ghats and surrounding areas should be cleaned and restored to their earlier condition.
Chhath Puja in Delhi will be celebrated this year from November 13 to 16. The evening arghya will mainly be offered on November 15 and the Usha arghya on November 16. The administration plans to prepare more than 1,400 ghats across the city.
